WHEAT KINGS RESPONDING TO MUMPS DIAGNOSIS

Brandon, MB. – Manitoba Public Health officials have confirmed today a member of the Brandon Wheat Kings organization has been diagnosed with mumps.

The Western Hockey League and Brandon Wheat Kings organization has engaged with and remains in contact with Manitoba Public Health authorities in an effort to ensure the immediate and future health of all players and staff.

Mumps is a virus that causes swollen and tender glands, particularly the salivary gland. It also causes flu-like symptoms such as fever and body aches. Mumps is spread through respiratory droplets of saliva and mucus from the nose, mouth  and throat, and can be present in a person for up to two weeks before symptoms arise.

Should you or your family have reason to believe you may be infected, contact your healthcare provider or public health office for assistance. Establish contact via telephone to alert the clinic so they may take adequate precautions to prevent the potential spread of the virus.

In Manitoba, contact your healthcare provider or Health Links at 204-788-8200 or 1-888-315-9257.

To help prevent the spread of the mumps virus, Manitoba Public Health advises people to wash their hands with soap and water regularly, or to use hand sanitizer whenever possible.
