Brandon, MB. — The Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings are pleased to announce the signing of Stelio Mattheos, the first overall selection in this year’s Bantam Draft in Calgary.

As a member of the Winnipeg Monarchs of the Winnipeg AAA Bantam hockey League, Mattheos scored 53 goals and 103 points in 35 regular season games in 2013-14. The 6’1″ 180 lb Winnipeg captain added another twelve goals and 19 points in eight playoff games.

“The Wheat Kings are extremely happy to bring Stelio into our organization,” says general manager and head coach Kelly McCrimmon. “He has a bright future, and we look forward to watching him develop as a Wheat King.”

“I’m really happy it’s official now,” says Mattheos, who will be ineligible to play full time for the Wheat Kings until the 2015-15 season. “I’m really excited to be with a great organization. They have a bright future and I can’t wait to get started.”

“My decision to sign with Brandon wasn’t a difficult one to make,” Mattheos went on to say. “Being so close to home and having the chance to play in front of family and friends is a bonus. I’m very excited about this opportunity…and I want to become the best player that I can be.”

National Hockey Leaguers chosen as the top bantam pick in their early WHL careers include the likes of Jarret Stoll (Edmonton Ice) of the Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues’ defenceman Jay Bouwmeester (Medicine Hat), Jonathan Toews (Tri-City) of the Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia’s Braydon Coburn (Portland) and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Red Deer) of the Edmonton Oilers.

This year marked the first time in franchise history that the Wheat Kings have had the number one selection.

In other Wheat Kings news, the hockey club’s Early Bird Season Ticket Deadline is this Friday, June 13th at 5pm. Those that do renew by the deadline will not only pay last year’s price, they will be entered to win a trip for two to Toronto in July to see the first place Blue Jays play host to the Texas Rangers at Rogers Centre.
