RECAP: Pats snap losing streak with win over Wheat Kings

REGINA S.K. – The Regina Pats hot start leads to a 6-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings Wednesday night.

The Pats came out flying scoring three goals to open the hockey game. First it was Stanislav Svozil who crashed the net and forced the puck through the legs of Carson Bjarnason and in to make it 1-0 Pats. Then the Bedard line would go to work with Connor Bedard and Brayden Barnett connecting from the left side circle giving the Pats a 2-0 lead only 9 minutes into the game. 2:39 later the Bedard line would force more turnovers inside the Wheat Kings zone placing the puck into the slot. The puck was bouncing around with no one able to clear. Tanner Howe was able to get a stick on it lifting the puck over the shoulder of Carson Bjarnason to make it 3-0 Pats after one period of play.

The second period the Wheat Kings had their powerplay opportunities but couldn’t cash in. In fact, it was the Pats who got on the board at the midway mark of the period with Tanner Hower scoring a shorthanded goal after Calder Anderson’s stick broke after firing a point shot. The Wheat Kings would finally get on the board with Andrei Malyavin firing a point shot which would go wide and off the glass allowing Rylen Roersma to collect the loose puck and finding Joby Baumuller in the slot allowing the top prospect to score his 2nd career WHL goal making it 4-1 Pats. The Pats would restore the 4 goal lead with Connor Bedard stepping out of the penalty box allowing Braxton Whitehead to swing him loose on a breakaway making no mistake beating Carson Bjarnason to make it 5-1 Pats.

The Wheat Kings needed a miracle 3rd period. Their record when allowing 4 or more goals against the opposition was 1-27-6 and they also had a 1-23-2 record when trailing after two periods. They would make things interesting with Nolan Ritchie and Zakhar Polshakov scoring in the third extending Polshakov’s point streak to 6 games but it wouldn’t be enough as Connor Bedard would score the empty net goal giving the Pats a 6-3 win snapping their 4 game losing streak.
