Saskatoon, SK – For the second straight game, a Chad Nychuk marker lifted the Brandon Wheat Kings to victory. The Rossburn, MB native scored 2:22 seconds into overtime on Wednesday night to give Brandon the 5-4 win over the Blades at Sasktel Centre.

Nychuk, who also scored the game winner on Sunday in Regina finished the night with two goals and finished with a +2 rating. Following up on Sunday’s 2G-1A performance, he becomes the first defenseman since Kale Clague in October of 2017 with consecutive multi-goal games.

“We didn’t love our start tonight,” said Assistant Coach Mark Derlago. “It took us a while to get going, but I liked our battle and compete level tonight. We had lots of guys step up…this was a good win.”

Rylen Roersma picked up a goal and an assists on the night, marking back to back multi-point nights for him, while Nolan Ritchie (1G-1A), Brett Hyland (2A) and Logen Hammett (2) also recorded multi-point nights.

“Once our game came around in the 2nd and 3rd period, the chances just started to come for us,” added Derlago. “Roersma and Hyland were great tonight. Those are the guys you need when you talk about secondary scoring and they came through.”

Hyland, who had missed the last four games with an upper-body injury drew back into the game on the third line, but quickly found himself moving up the lineup and playing important minutes both even strength and shorthanded.

Carson Bjarnason kicked aside 31 shots to earn his second consecutive victory.

Both teams scored once on the powerplay while the Wheat Kings picked up their first short-handed marker of the season to help win the special teams battle on the night.

The win moves Brandon back to .500 heading into a weekend meeting on home ice vs the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night.
