News article: BRANDON COMPLETES SWEEP OF ICE
Thursday, March 26, 2009

Cranbrook, B.C. -- The Brandon Wheat Kings have advanced to the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

Brayden Schenn's goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation time lifted the Wheat Kings to a 4-3 victory over the Kootenay Ice, completing a four game sweep of their best of seven opening round playoff series.

Schenn's game winning tally came five minutes after Andrew Bailey had scored his second third period goal to even the score at three and it marked the second straight one goal decision in Cranbrook for these two teams. Matt Calvert's overtime goal on Tuesday lifted Brandon to a 4-3 win in game three.

The goal by the 17-year old Saskatoon product capped off a terrific series for the 2007-08 WHL Rookie of the Year. Schenn finished with four goals, 8 points and a plus 7 ranking against the Ice.

Leading 2-1 after forty minutes of play Wednesday night, Brodie Melnychuk - with his first ever WHL playoff goal - gave Brandon a shortlived two goal lead in the third period. Andrew Clark and Matt Calvert, with his third goal in two games, also scored for the Wheat Kings, who will now have over a week to rest before the start of their second round series.

Kevin King also scored in a losing cause for the Ice, who trailed 2-0 after twenty minutes of play.

Veteran Andrew Hayes turned aside 28 of 31 shots in posting his fourth straight post-season win while Todd Mathews stopped 22 shots in the Kootenay net.

With the win, the Wheat Kings extended their unbeaten streak on the road to eleven games (10-0-0-1). Brandon hasn't lost a game in regulation time on the road since January 30th.

This also marked the first 4-game series sweep for the Wheat Kings since the 1997-98 campaign when they defeated the Lethbridge Hurricanes four games to nothing in their best of seven opening round playoff.

In other WHL Eastern Conference playoff action Wednesday, the Calgary hitmen completed a sweep of the Edmonton Oil Kings with a 4-1 victory, Lethbridge edged Saskatoon 2-1 to even up that series at two games a piece and it was Medicine Hat 5-3 winners over Swift Current, tieing that series at two.

Having compiled the third best record in the Eastern Conference this season, the Wheat Kings will play one of three teams in round two - Saskatoon, Swift Current or Medicine Hat. The earliest Brandon will know their next opponent will be Sunday night.

Due to the annual Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, scheduled for next week at the Keystone Centre, the Wheat Kings will open the Eastern Conference semi-finals on the road. Ticket information on Brandon's next two playoff home games will be announced in the next few days.
