Brandon, MB. – The Brandon Wheat Kings kicked off the final weekend of Western Hockey League pre-season play Friday night with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors at Westoba Place.
Former Warrior Luka Burzan scored once and set up two others as the Wheat Kings jumped out to a 3-0 lead en route to improving their pre-season record to 1-0-1-1.
The two teams will close out a weekend home and home series Sunday in Moose Jaw.
Burzan, who was playing in his first game with the Wheat Kings after being returned by the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators earlier in the week, was one of the pieces acquired from Moose Jaw in last January’s trade deadline deal that saw all star blueliner Kale Clague go to the Warriors.
Caiden Daley and Baron Thompson also scored for the Wheat Kings, who received a solid 30-save performance from netminder Dylan Myskiw.
Dalton Hamaliuk and Tate Popple scored in a losing cause for the Warriors, who took advantage of a rash of third period penalties to Brandon.
Brandon coach David Anning on Friday’s pre-season win.
“The second period really changed just based on how we defended and how we got the puck moving,” Anning told the Brandon Sun’s Perry Bergson. “It gave us a lot of momentum. There were a lot of strong performances, and we were happy that we were able to have all those different situations we were able to evaluate.”
Friday’s game capped a busy day for the Wheat Kings’ organization that hosted its annual Season Ticket Pick up Day throughout the day. Fans that did not pick up Friday can do so this coming week by stopping by their Keystone Centre office. That invitation also goes out to anyone looking at purchasing a 2018-19 season ticket.
Following Sunday’s game, the Wheat Kings will begin preparations for next weekend’s Brandon Sun Home Opener on Friday night.
Tickets to the game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com
