Brandon, MB. – The Brandon Wheat Kings, in association with Atom-Jet Group have announced the first winner of its Community Hero Award for the 2017-18 Western Hockey League season.

This marks the second time in less than a month that Minnedosa Collegiate Grade 11 student Katie Brown has been recognized for her outstanding volunteer work. She was recently awarded the prestigious Governor General’s Sovereign Medal for Volunteers at a ceremony in Winnipeg. The award was presented by Craig Kielburger, co-founder of the Free the Children social justice organization.

Over the course of the past five years, Kate has made bracelets and sold them at flea markets and craft sales to raise money for an orphanage / school in the Dominican Republic. Since beginning her work for Blancos Kids, Katie has helped to generate in excess of $10,000. As well, she travelled to the Dominican Republic and spent time volunteering with the Blancos Kids program in both 2014 and 2016.

Since moving on to Minnedosa Collegiate, she has continued her work as a volunteer and leader with the school’s social justice group as well as student council.

Each month during the 2017-18 Wheat Kings season, an individual or group is chosen the Atom-Jet Community Hero of the Month. This award is presented to those, who have demonstrated significant achievements, performances and contributions to western Manitoba in the areas of athletics, charity work and volunteer efforts.

A presentation to Ms. Brown will be made Tuesday night during the Wheat Kings’ game against the visiting Calgary Hitmen. Tickets to the game – presented by KAL TIRE Brandon – are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at

This game will be the first “2 for Tuesday” of the season, which means fans will receive a “free” ticket to the game when they purchase one at equal value. The Keystone Centre will also be offering a number of special concession items at discount prices.
